Job Description

Say hello to Counties Energy
Energy Reimagined

Ko mātou tēnei – our organisation

At Counties Energy, our purpose is to power thriving communities by unlocking the full energy potential of the region to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.

As a 100% community owned electricity distributor, we deliver safe and reliable power to over 50,000 homes and businesses from south Auckland to the top of the Waikato.

Ko tō tūranga – your role

Kick start your career in the energy sector with a hands-on, 6 month fixed-term graduate intern opportunity at Counties Energy. This project-based role sits within our Network and Digital Business unit and reports directly to the Chief Network and Digital Officer.

You will work alongside senior leaders on real projects that influence how we plan, invest in and operate our electricity network during New Zealand’s energy transition.

We’re looking for a curious, analytical graduate who enjoys problem-solving and working with ambiguity. You’ll turn complex information into clear, evidence-based insights, gain exposure to senior decision making, and receive direct mentoring to support your professional development.

This is an ideal opportunity for business (or related) graduate keen to gain knowledge in infrastructure, strategy, and the energy sector.

Ōu pūkenga - What will you bring?

  • Currently enrolled at a New Zealand university in a business, commerce, economics, finance, or related programme — typically in your penultimate or final year or studying at honours or master’s level.
  • Strong analytical capability — able to structure ambiguous problems, conduct your own desk research, and form a defensible point of view.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt the message for different audiences, from technical engineers to the Board.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office — in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint — and a track record of picking up new tools quickly.
  • Genuine curiosity about the energy sector, regulation, and how infrastructure businesses create value. Prior exposure is a plus but not essential.
  • Strong personal integrity, sound judgement, and the ability to operate with discretion in a small, trusted leadership team.
  • A constructive, self-directed working style — someone who takes ownership, asks good questions, and follows through.
  • Resilient and adaptable, able to manage shifting priorities across multiple concurrent pieces of work.

At Counties Energy, we value a growth mindset, so if you have most of these skills or characteristics in your toolbox, we encourage you to apply.

Nā mātou te rourou – what you’ll receive

Based in Pukekohe, we have a great culture that is fun, friendly, and supportive. You’ll quickly see why working with us is something special.

  • Training and development opportunities
  • Competitive remuneration
  • Experience in one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing and leading electricity distribution businesses

Me pēhea te tono - How to apply?

If you’re based in Aotearoa New Zealand with relevant work rights and are willing to undergo our pre-employment medical check and drug test, we look forward to receiving your application including CV and cover letter by Wednesday 27th May 2026.

Applications may be reviewed as they are received.  Early applications are encouraged.

Please note that you may not receive notification of the outcome of your application until the vacancy has closed and we have completed the shortlisting process.

(No recruitment agencies please)
